A recently released short film titled Jamaica’s Silent Children by Al Jazeera has cast a spotlight on the high rates of child abuse in Jamaica.

Is child sex abuse embedded in Jamaica’s culture?

A shocking 40% percent of Jamaicans have stated that their first sexual encounter was forced and while still under the age of consent according to the Caribbean Vulnerable Communities Coalition. To compound matters, victims are often times reluctant to report sex abuse due to safety concerns or how they will be perceived by others.

Dire financial situations and lack of decent employment opportunities are also fuelling the high rate sexual exploitation; sometimes parents encourage their daughters to have relations with older men for financial rewards.
