It was certainly a race fitting of a World Championships final.

Dutch athlete Dafne Schippers proved to be just a little too much to handle for Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson in the women’s 200 metres final at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing today.

The electrifying Schippers won the race in 21.63 seconds, a new championship record.

Schippers’ acceleration in the final 50 metres saw her rapidly close ground on Thompson who seemed destined to win gold.

In the end Schippers did just enough to edge Thompson who earned silver with a personal best of 21.66 seconds.

Jamaica’s veteran athlete Veronica Campbell-Brown produced a season’s best of 21.97 seconds to earn bronze and another medal for Jamaica.
