Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls Begin Netball World Cup With Smashing 46 Goal Win
Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls began their 2015 Netball World Cup in Sydney splendidly after they breezed their way to a relatively easy 90-44 win over Pool B rivals Samoa at the All-Phones Arena.
Star goal-shooter Jhaniele Fowler-Reid after she converted in impressive 39 of 45 attempts.
Romelda Aiken offered good support as will scoring 29 of her 32 shots. Anna-Kay Griffiths and Shanice Beckford also bagged 11 goals each.
Jamaica led 25-9 after the 1st quarter, 45-24 at halftime and led the Samoan girls 72-33 lead at the end of three quarters.
The Sunshine Girls will return to action at 2:20 am Saturday morning against England before closing out the group stage against Scotland at 4:20am on Monday.
Jamaica found their rhythm very early in the match and during the second half of the first quarter were able to thwart any entry to the Samoan goal circle.
Samoan player Auteletoa Tanimo was impressive at times shooting six from seven goals in the first quarter but was unable to do much more to build the Samoan score..
Samoa was much more resilient in the game’s second quarter, due largely to experienced ANZ Championship campaigner Naoupu-Laban coming into the game dominating centre pass receives and providing her team with more scoring opportunities. Debutant Jamaican shooter Anna Kay Griffiths was introduced in the second quarter shooting 11 from 13 attempts.
The bench was utilised by both teams in the third quarter and saw the introduction of star Jamaican goal shooter and the tallest player in the competition (198 centimetres) Jhaniele Fowler-Reid. Jamaica was able to dominate their opponents in most areas of the court and at three quarter time led the game 72-33.
Fourth quarter saw additional more changes from the bench for both sides, but in the end despite some promising signs from Samoa, Jamaica’s experience and height proved too much for their opponents.
Action in the other games saw Wales posting a 59-52 win over Fij and Singapore carving out a 56-43 win over Sri Lanka.
