Reported witness of Mario Deane’s Fatal Beating Escapes Police Custody

According to a report by Irie FM, the Independent Commission of Investigation (Indecom) has declined to comment on reports that one of its witnesses in the Mario Deane case has escaped from police custody.

Indecom’s Public Relations Officer Kahmile Reid says the matter is an operational one.

Ms. Reid also says Indecom will also not be commenting on the results of identification parades held over the weekend and yesterday(September 15) regarding the case.

She says the public will be notified as soon as the investigations in to the beating and death of Mario Deane are completed. She says the case is 90 % complete.

Sources close to the matter told Irie FM News that the inmate who escaped from the St. James police is a witness in the Mario Deane case.

He is 21-year-old Fahdean Ferguson, otherwise called ‘Tussain and Joshua’, a mechanic of Hampton, Spring Mount in the parish.

A release from the police communications unit says Ferguson had been taken from the Barnett Street police lock up to participate in an ID parade on the weekend.

While in a holding cell awaiting transport back to Barnett Street, Ferguson escaped through an open window.

Sources say the Ferguson is one of several other inmates who allegedly witnessed the beating of Mario Deane at the Barnett Street lock up.

Its understood that Ferguson pointed out a police officer during the identification parade, prior to his escape.

The sources also say other inmates who witnessed the beating of Deane had already given statements to Indecom and have expressed fear for their lives.
