Former champions Portmore United on the verge of being relegated!
Former champions Portmore United are on the brink of being relegated from the Red Stripe Premier League following their 2-0 loss to Waterhouse FC at Ferdie Neita Park.
With one set of games remaining, Portmore are second from bottom in 11th spot on 33 points and with August Town already relegated, they can only surpass Boys Town on 35 points. It now leaves them needing them to win their game against Humble Lion at the Effortville Community Centre on Sunday while hoping Red Brigade to lose their final match to neighbours Arnett Gardens.
But Portmore United can expect no favours from the Clarendon outfit as that parish is still smarting from when Portmore United, then Hazard United at the time, changed their name and switched from Clarendon to St Catherine.
Meanwhile goals from Damarley Samuels (32) and Steve Broderick (87) pushed Waterhouse to 62 points as they cement their spot atop of the league heading into the playoffs.
At Collie Smith Drive, home team Boys Town earned a priceless point in their 1-1 draw with Humble Lion that took them a step closer to relegation safety. Peter Keys unlocked the Humble Lion defence and gave Boys Town a sixth minute lead before Hugh Howell pulled Humble Lion levelled in the 67th minute.
Humble Lion on the other hand are now safe lying in ninth spot on 38 points and cannot be surpassed by Portmore United and can only be passed by Boys Town on goal difference.
At the UWI Bowl, the already relegated August Town as expected threw in the towel and were dismantled 6-0 by a rampant Arnett Gardens. The Junglists, who were recording their 15th win of the season, moved a spot to third on goal difference with 52 points courtesy of goals from Kemal Malcolm (35), Vanado Manning (46), Andre Clennon (37, 70), Jason Moore (77) and Leon Strickland (84). It was August Town’s 15th defeat from 32 matches and they remained on 27 points at the bottom.
Harbour View and Montego Bay United meanwhile battled to a 1-1 draw at the Compound as they continued their preparations for the semi-final playoffs. Harbour View have not won in their last three games and stayed in second spot on 53 points.
Allan Ottey gave the visiting Montego Bay United a sixth minute lead before Brian Brown netted in the 73rd minute for a share of the points. Montego Bay United with the result slipped spot to fourth on 52 points.
Meanwhile Rivoli United continued their splendid end of season form by clipping Sporting Central Academy 1-0 at the Juici Patties Park in Clarendon. Jeremy Nelson scored in the very first minute as Rivoli consolidated fifth spot on 44 points while Sporting stayed eighth on 38 points.
At the Edward Seaga Sports Complex, Tivoli Gardens blanked Cavalier 2-0 and stayed in sixth spot with 42 points. Navion Boyd (32) and Elton Thompson 90+ scored the goals. Cavalier are seventh on 39 points.
