7 foot snake shocks residents of Portland!
Although Jamaica is known to have seven species of snakes which are indigenous to the island, it is quite rare to discover a really big snake. Sightings are rare thanks to the introduction of the mongoose to the island in 1872 which drastically reduced the snake population.
According to a report by Irie FM, residents of Black Rock in Portland were surprised at the discovery of a dead Jamaican yellow snake on the weekend.
The 7-foot Jamaican boa drew curious onlookers from as far as Islington who expressed shock at the size of the reptile.
A resident of Black Rock told Iriefm news that the animal was spotted in the community on Saturday. The resident says by Sunday morning the animal was dead and appears to have been run over by a motor vehicle.
The Jamaican boa is the largest of all snake species found in the island. It is an endangered animal and is protected under the wildlife protection act.
