Jamaica’s Doug Gore wins Caribbean Motor Racing Championship
Jamaican ace driver Doug ‘Hollywood’ Gore has won the champion drivers trophy despite having mixed results at Sunday’s final leg of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship at the South Dakota Circuit in Guyana.
Gore entered the event with 75 points and needing only to finish among the top three in the three CMRC races to claim the title.
Despite lowering his own track record, he was kept off the top of the podium by local favourites Mark Vieira and Kevin Jeffrey, with Jeffrey winning two races and Viera one.
The focus of the over 12,000 spectators was how the Mitsubishi Evolution VIII of Jeffrey and the Mazda RX 8 of Mark Vieira would fare against the powerful Audi TT of Gore and as early as the first race they got their monies worth as the two Guyanese combined well to take the top two spots.
Gore, starting from lane two on the grid was kept in that position at the opening lap of the second race, but quickly used his superior speed down the straights to pass Vieira on the second lap, but was no match for Jeffrey, who sped away from his opponents en route to consecutive wins.
Jeffrey broke the track record doing 33.439 in lap 2, with Gore rebounding in lap 3 to lower it to 33.401. However Gore under immense pressure from Jeffrey spun on the infield and was passed by both Jeffrey and Viera. He however recovered and came 3rd with Jamaican teammate Peter Rae 4th.
The order was the same at the start of the third race, but Jeffrey after leading for three laps suffered a computer failure and that allowed Vieira to streak away to victory with Gore trailing him into second.
Gore ended his day with a 5th place finish in the third and final race in Group 4 after having a flat tyre.
Jamaica however lost out on its bid to repeat as overall country champions after the performances of Kevin Jeffrey and the Vieiras, Mark, Stephen and Paul, saw Guyana claim the title with 508 points.
The Jamaican contingent which also includes Peter Rae, and Noel Golding JR, are scheduled to return home on Monday.
