The government says Jamaicans can expect the delivery of thousands of housing solutions this fiscal year.

Minister with responsibility for Housing, Dr. Morais Guy, in his contribution to the Sectoral Debate this afternoon (May 21), said government is aware of the need to address urgently, the housing shortfalls with a major contributor being affordability.

He stated, that the administration is committed to making home ownership a reality for thousands more Jamaicans, saying this  will  be brought about through the re-energised and revamped focus on several priority areas,  chief among which is  the attainment of low income housing for Jamaicans.

In summing up the housing prospects for this year Dr. Guy said nearly 400 solutions, will be directly facilitated by the Housing Ministry and just over 300 will be developed by the National Housing Trust, in three schemes.

A further 600 solutions are being financed through the NHT in at least five private developments, while more than one  thousand  solutions will be completed by the Housing Agency of Jamaica with almost three thousand to commence construction.

18 hundred houses are to be delivered this by the partnership between government and Food for the Poor, while the government expects over one thousand one hundred housing solutions to come from possible public / private partnership agreements once negotiations are completed this year.

Meantime, Dr. Guy highlighted a major housing project to be undertaken by the HAJ in Bernard Lodge St. Catherine.

He said cabinet had approved a public/private partnership contract for the HAJ to construct 604 one-bedroom units and 980 studio units, with associated infrastructure, on approximately 295 acres of land.

The project will be financed and constructed by a foreign investor – Mal-Phrus International.

The capital outlay will be approximately $5.6 b to be expended over three years.

Dr. Guy explains that public sector workers are to benefit from some of these housing solutions.

He emphasized throughout his speech that the government is housing Jamaicans , and highlighted several areas  being tackled including the urban renewal programme, joint venture programmes and titling programme which will see more Jamaicans getting their land titles.
