Riverton Dump Could Provide 10% of Jamaica’s Power According to Energy Minister

60 million watts (60 megawatts) of electricity could be fueled by waste from the Riverton City dump according to Energy Minister Phillip Paulwell.

In other words nearly 10 per cent of Jamaica’s peak electricity demands could be filled by the dump.

According to Loop NewsPaulwell said that the Office of Utilities Regulation and the local government ministry are “in the final stages of submitting to cabinet a proposal for waste to energy.”

The minister was speaking at the breakfast forum of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston on Tuesday.

With estimates that a 20-megawatt plant can be fuelled by the Retirement dump site in Montego Bay, the potential waste-to-energy electricity output in Jamaica is total up to 80 megawatts.

In 2009, the Government had chosen Cambridge Project Development Company to establish 65 megawatts of electricity generation capacity that would use waste from the dumps as its fuel. However, the project never got off the ground.
