Jamaica Could Get Much-Needed Rain as Tropical Wave Approaches

Jamaica could receive much-needed rainfall early next week as a strong tropical wave moves through the region, according to the Meteorological Service.

Current projections have the system passing near the island by Monday, August 17. Despite its potential to strengthen beforehand, forecasters do not expect it to be a tropical storm or hurricane while in Jamaica’s vicinity.

Evan Thompson, Principal Director of the Meteorological Service Branch in the Ministry of Water, Environment and Climate Change, said the feature could briefly become better organised before conditions become less favourable.

The system is showing enough development potential to possibly become a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.

However, Thompson indicated that weakening is anticipated once it reaches the Caribbean over the weekend.

Rainfall associated with the tropical wave is expected to affect sections of Jamaica as it passes through the area.

The Met Service is also keeping watch on another tropical wave moving westward across the Atlantic towards the Caribbean.

Thompson provided the latest assessment during a media update on Thursday, August 13, as forecasters continued monitoring both Atlantic systems.
