Jamaica Sweeps 400m Hurdles Golds at Carifta Games

Jamaica dominated the 400m hurdles events on Sunday’s second day of the 53rd Carifta Games at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium in St George’s, Grenada.
Despite intermittent rain delays, the team surged ahead of all competitors in the overall standings.
At the latest count, Jamaica amassed 36 medals — 13 gold, 13 silver and 10 bronze — comfortably ahead of Trinidad and Tobago’s 17 and The Bahamas’ 15.
A powerful late surge carried Jahvanie Tyrell to victory in the Boys’ Under-20 400m hurdles in 50.35 seconds.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Omari Brown edged past Robert Miller on the line for silver in 50.91, leaving the pre-event favourite with bronze in 50.97.
Redemption came for Oneil Lawrence, who secured the Boys’ Under-17 title in 53.06 after missing the Champs Class 2 final.
Close behind, Kavian Minnott claimed silver in 53.36, narrowly ahead of Grenada’s Tevaughn Hall in 53.45.
A dominant run saw Nastassia Fletcher take the Girls’ Under-20 gold in 58.05, finishing well clear of teammate Marria Crossfield.
Trinidad’s Jenna Marie Thomas completed the podium in 59.20.
Improvement from last year earned Alyssa Carty gold in the Girls’ Under-17 final with 1:01.84.
Haiti celebrated its first medal through Hope Edwards’ silver, while Jamaica’s Imani Lowe secured bronze.
Elsewhere, Sushanna Johnson picked up bronze in the Girls’ Open 3,000m.
Earlier in the day, Able Mills delivered gold in the Girls’ Under-20 shot put with 15.27m.
Second place went to Trinidad and Tobago’s Peyton Winter, while Marla-Kay Lampart finished third.
The Boys’ Under-20 long jump saw defending champion Michael-Andre Edwards settle for silver behind Bahamian winner Carlin Archer.
Cayman Islands’ Kaliah Haye retained her Girls’ Under-17 discus title, with Jamaicans Dajounae Rudolph and Zoeyann Plummer taking the minor medals.
Sprint double contender Shanoya Douglas advanced in the 200m after retaining her 100m crown, joined by Natrece East.
Qualification for Monday’s 200m finals was secured by Sanjay Seymore and Elijah Smeikle in the Under-20 boys’ category.
Advancing in the Under-17 ranks were Shayon Smith, Danelia Clarke, Mario Ross and Tyler Morgan.
Middle-distance progress included Joel Morgan and Malike Anderson moving into the Under-20 800m final.
Final spots in the Under-17 boys’ 800m went to Luke Plummer and Markland Williams.
Aneka Lowe progressed to the Girls’ Under-17 800m final, while Kemaya Graham fell short.
The Under-20 boys’ 4x100m relay team advanced with the sixth-fastest time of 40.71 after placing fourth in their semi-final.
