Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Beloved ‘Cosby Show’ Star, Dies at 54

A tragic accident has claimed the life of actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who passed away at the age of 54.
According to the Costa Rican National Police, Warner drowned on Sunday after being caught in a rip current off the coast of Cocles Beach in Limon.
His body was found later that afternoon, and authorities confirmed the cause of death as asphyxia.
Identification of Warner was formally completed by Costa Rica’s national law enforcement officials.
Well-known for his portrayal of Theodore “Theo” Huxtable, Warner starred in all eight seasons of The Cosby Show, which aired from 1985 to 1992 and earned him an Emmy nomination.
His acting career extended beyond the iconic sitcom, with roles such as Dr. Alex Reed in BET’s Reed Between the Lines and a co-starring position in Malcolm & Eddie from 1996 to 2000 alongside Eddie Griffin.
In recent years, Warner had a recurring role in The Resident, appearing in five of the six seasons of the Fox medical drama.
Born on August 18, 1970, he pursued acting from a young age and completed his education at The Professional Children’s School in New York City.
Warner’s early work included guest spots on Matt Houston in 1982 and Fame in 1983 before landing his breakout role in The Cosby Show the following year, joining a cast that featured Bill Cosby, Phylicia Rashad, and Lisa Bonet.
After his run on The Cosby Show, Warner made appearances in numerous television series, including The Michael J. Fox Show, Key & Peele among others.
In 2011, he headlined the BET series Reed Between the Lines alongside actress Tracee Ellis Ross.
