Jamaica’s Fowler-Nembhard Reaches 9,000 Goals as Fever Edge GIANTS
Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard delivered another dominant performance to lead West Coast Fever to a 75-66 win over GIANTS Netball at Ken Rosewall Arena on Saturday.
The Jamaican shooter scored 63 goals from 66 attempts, guiding Fever to their fifth straight victory since her return and surpassing 9,000 national league goals in the process.
Fever started strong, scoring a perfect 21 from 21 in the opening quarter to establish an eight-goal lead. Fowler-Nembhard reached her milestone 9,000th goal with her 12th of the match.
Fever’s defenders, Sunday Aryang and Fran Williams, disrupted GIANTS’ early rhythm, holding them scoreless for the first five minutes.
GIANTS responded in the second quarter with a reshuffled lineup. Maddie Hay and Matisse Letherbarrow sparked a resurgence, cutting the deficit to four at halftime (40-36).
Letherbarrow ended with 36 goals from 40 attempts, including eight super shots from 12, while Sophie Dwyer added eight goals and two super shots.
The GIANTS levelled the scores in the third quarter as Fever briefly faltered. However, a knee injury to Jamaican defender Jodi-Ann Ward halted their momentum.
Ward returned with heavy strapping before being replaced by debutant Aimee Landrigan. Fever regained control, with Olivia Wilkinson sinking back-to-back super shots and Fowler-Nembhard finishing clinically to take a 60-55 lead into the final quarter.
Fever controlled the pace in the last 15 minutes, maintaining their advantage to seal the win.
Wilkinson contributed six points, including two super shots and two goals under the post. Shanice Beckford supported with two super shots and two goals from four regular attempts.
Fever now sit second in the standings on 20 points, eight behind unbeaten leaders NSW Swifts. The GIANTS remain at the bottom with four points after their sixth loss of the season.
