Greenwood On the Verge of Finalising Switch to Represent Jamaica
Marseille striker Mason Greenwood is reportedly on the verge of switching his international allegiance from England to Jamaica, according to English media reports.
The 23-year-old forward, who has been in impressive form for Marseille this season, is said to be finalising the process, with only a family member’s signature needed to address a technicality.
Greenwood will be eligible to play for the Reggae Boyz once the paperwork is completed.
The move comes after the Football Association (FA) informed Greenwood that he would not be considered for future selection for the England national team.
This decision followed his suspension three years ago due to charges of attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour.
Although these charges were later dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service, the FA maintained its stance, effectively ending Greenwood’s England career.
Having earned his only cap for England at the age of 18, Greenwood remains eligible to switch international teams under FIFA regulations.
Sources suggest he could make his debut for Jamaica under head coach Steve McClaren in the World Cup qualifiers in June. However, Marseille is reportedly reluctant to release Greenwood for Jamaica’s friendly matches next month.
Greenwood has revived his career after joining Marseille last summer in a £27 million move from Manchester United. He is currently the leading scorer in Ligue 1 with 12 goals this season, solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s top talents.
With the move to Jamaica, Greenwood could greatly bolster a Reggae Boyz squad aiming for success in upcoming international tournaments.
