More Than 2,200 Jamaicans Employed in ‘Bob Marley: One Love’ Movie Says Paramount Pictures CEO
CEO Brian Robbins of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon revealed that more than 2,200 Jamaicans were employed in the cast and production of the upcoming biopic “Bob Marley: One Love.”
Robbins, speaking at a pre-screening event at Carib 5 Theater 1, expressed gratitude for the collaboration with the Marley family, underlining the significance of Jamaican contributions.
“Everyone at Paramount is so honoured to have worked alongside the Marley family to bring this story of Bob’s message of love, peace, and unity to the big screen. We are very proud.”
“We truly could not have done this film without the people of Jamaica.
“In front of and behind the camera, we were able to employ over 400 Jamaican cast and crew, and more than 1,800 background actors to deliver 25 days of filming on the island,” he added.
The major motion picture, filmed in Jamaica and the U.K., boasts British actors Kingsley Ben-Adir as Bob Marley and Lashana Lynch as Rita Marley.
Robbins highlighted Paramount’s substantial investments in Kingston, specifically in Trench Town, the movie’s filming location.
This included the construction of an outdoor learning pavilion and security booths at Trench Town Primary School.
While the film’s budget remains undisclosed, Robbins assured that Paramount made considerable investments beyond filming, benefitting the Trench Town community.
Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, the movie is scheduled for a global release on February 14, 2024, following its Kingston premiere attended by notable figures such as Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex.
However, the casting decision has stirred debates, with Bob Marley’s son, Ky-Mani Marley, expressing a preference for a Jamaican actor in the lead role.
Despite the controversy, theater producer Lenford Salmon and playwright Basil Dawkins argue that talent, likeness, and the director’s vision are crucial considerations, emphasising the universal appeal of Bob Marley.
