No Early Election Plans Says Prime Minister Andrew Holness

Prime Minister Holness Addresses Speculation on Elections and Focuses on Economic Stability

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has dismissed speculation that an early general election or local government election might be approaching, emphasising instead his dedication to ensuring that vulnerable Jamaicans begin to experience the positive effects of the current economic stability.

Addressing the public during a housing and land town hall meeting at Harmony Beach Park in Montego Bay, St James, Holness stated that his encouragement for people to maintain hope amidst their present challenges is not indicative of any election-related agenda.

“I hear everybody talking about elections all of a sudden. We’re a democracy.

“When elections are due, they’re due, but we must not postpone and defer and interrupt our progress for elections,” emphasised Holness.

Earlier this month, Holness reaffirmed the government’s commitment to conducting the long-awaited local government elections, which are constitutionally mandated to occur by February 2024, barring unforeseen external factors or weather events affecting the island.

Lately, political pressures in Jamaica have heightened, with the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) unveiling several candidates as standard-bearers for constituencies in anticipation of the national polls scheduled for 2025.
