Reggae Boyz Suffer 1-0 Defeat to Soca Warriors

The Reggae Boyz gave up an early first-half goal to suffer a 1-0 defeat at the hands of  Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) in the first of their two-way encounter, at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Friday night.

The winning goal was scored in the fifth minute and came from danger man Atavila Guerra, when he capitalized on a rebound off Kenwyne Jones’ shot and placed the ball in the back of the net.

Head coach Winfried Schäfer said, after just two days work on the training ground, the game served its purpose.

Jamaica vs Trinidad football“We had just two training days with a new team; the first 45 minutes was good and we played better in the second half,” said Schäfer.

“It was okay for us. As we used mainly young players, local players and we cannot blame them for mistakes,” he added.

The Soca Warriors who had four European-based players in their starting line-up controlled the game for the first half .

The introduction of Jermaine Woozencroft in  the second half turned the tables completely, and allowed Jamaica to control the pace of the game. Woozencraft combined wonderfully with Je-Vaughn Watson, allowing him to make controlled passes that pushed T&T back against their goal.

Local favourite and Waterhouse striker  Jermaine ‘Tuffy’ Anderson hit a beautiful shot  that sailed over the head of Trinidad keeper Jan Michael Williams in the 13th minute; and again in the 21st – before being substituted at the half.

The Reggae Boyz departed the island yesterday for the twin-island republic, where they will engage in friendly battle on Tuesday.
