Mexico continues to represent the CONCACAF region well having secured a semi-final spot in the Confederations Cup in Russia.

On Saturday Mexico outscored hosts Russia 2-1 to earn a spot in the last four.

And their semi-final encounter this Thursday (June 29), will provide EL Tri with arguably their biggest challenge of the competition thus far when they take on world champions Germany.

Mexico has had a fairy-tale run thus far. They earned a 2-2 draw against a strong Portugal team in their opening game before getting past New Zealand and Russia with identical 2-1 wins.

Germany on the other hand won their first game against Australia 3-1 before playing to a 1-1 draw with Chile. Their third game saw them outscore Cameroon by 3-1.

Portugal will face Chile in the competition’s other semi-final on Wednesday (June 28). Portugal has also been impressive. After playing to a 2-2 draw with Mexico, they earned a narrow 1- 0 win over Russia before comfortably defeating New Zealand 4-0.

The odds are against Mexico to get past Germany to reach the final but it would be wonderful to see Mexico win their second Confederations Cup. They previously won in 1999.

For now, it seems most pundits of the sport are expecting an all European final. According to Sports Betting Experts, Germany and Portugal are equally favoured at +200 to win the 2017 Confederations Cup.

Mexico will certainly benefit from these games ahead of the Gold Cup – which begins next month.

Jamaica and Mexico have been drawn in Group C alongside El Salvador and Curaçao.

The Gold Cup will run from July 7 to July 26.

The FIFA Confederations Cup is an international association football tournament for national teams, currently held every four years by FIFA. It is contested by the holders of each of the six (UEFA, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF, CAF, AFC, OFC) regional championships, along with the current FIFA World Cup holder and the host nation, to bring the number of teams up to eight.
