JDF Recruit Stricken by Mystery Illness Flown Overseas For Treatment

A Jamaica Defence Force recruit who recently became critically ill after being stricken by a mystery illness has been flown to the United States for treatment.
 
He was among 80 recruits who reportedly fell ill during a training session at Twickenham Park camp last week.
 
According to RJR, the recruit was flown to a medical facility in Florida last night after undergoing a medical procedure at the University Hospital of the West Indies, yesterday afternoon.
 
Fifty-seven recruits were taken to Up Park Camp for treatment of which 40 have since returned to training, while 17 remain in isolation at Up Park Camp.
 
The Ministry of Health and the Pan American Health Organisation, PAHO, are collaborating to try to ascertain the source of the illness which is believed to be caused by bacteria.
 
Blood samples have also been sent abroad for testing.
