Thompson, Schippers to Face Off Again!
It has been a very busy past few weeks for Jamaica’s two time Olympic gold medallist Elaine Thompson.
The 24-year-old is arguably the most successful female sprinter in the world this year, having won three Olympic medals (2 gold, 1 silver).
Last year, the Dutch athlete Dafne Schippers defeated Thompson in the 200m event at the World Championships, and was considered to be unbeatable over that distance.
However, at the recently concluded Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil, Thompson flipped the script entirely when she beat Schippers in the women’s 200m final in a time of 21.87 seconds to take gold.
Two weeks later, Thompson bested Schippers once again after she posted a new Diamond League record of 21.85 seconds seconds to win the women’s 200m at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Zurich.
Thompson won the women’s 100m event at the Rio Olympics after clocking 10.71 seconds. Schippers placed 5th in that event with a time of 10.90s, but will undoubtedly be aiming to improve her time.
On Friday (September 9), she will get an opportunity to do just that when the two women will once again race to the finish line in the 100m dash at the final IAAF Diamond League meeting of the season in Brussels.
Thompson will be among three finalists and three semi-finalists from Rio who will come together for perhaps their last track appearance this year at the King Baudouin Stadium.
She will be joined by compatriots Simone Facey, Natasha Morrison and Christania Williams.
