Young Jamaicans Now ‘Coders of the Caribbean’ After Winning Regional Event
After spending 42 hours working on their project, Kode Williams and Shervain Barrett have emerged as the winners of Coders Of The Caribbean.
The Jamaican duo created “Koopan”, an app that helps consumers find the best deals for their money and also helps small and medium businesses get their deals in front of consumers.
Kode Williams, a recent graduate of Campion College and Shervain Barrett, a student of the University of Technology stated: “Our inspiration for this app was to put more power behind less money for both businesses and consumers.”
The team walked away with the grand prize of $200,000 courtesy of Digicel and $20,000 from NCB for the top app that helps persons save money.
Team – El Chapos placed second with members: Romar Peart , Gavin Smith ,Ramon Barrett and Roshelle Pinnock.
Considering the growth of the marijuana industry they’ve created a solution that connects tourists to authorized “Weed Houses” where they can legally enjoy marijuana while travelling.
Team – Goods To Go was third with members: Chinelle Miller , Juleen Gentles , Morgan Kennedy and Tanice Brown.
Goods To Go helps connect large companies who needs a consistent flow of organic materials to small farmers.
Coders Of The Caribbean, sponsored by NCB , Digicel , Microsoft, The Development Bank Of Jamaica, BCIC and PitchIT Caribbean saw over 70 participants spending an entire weekend at Start Up Jamaica creating an app that solves an everyday problem.
At the end of the competition teams presented their apps to a panel of Judges.
Coders of the Caribbean is organized by Next Gen Creators, a team of young entrepreneurs who promote coding and entrepreneurship.
With tech on the rise throughout the world, Next Gen Creators wants to promote computer science by creating the island’s only ‘code marathon’ for youth.
