Confirmed Cases of Zika Virus Among Pregnant Women in Jamaica Increases

There has been an increase in the number of confirmed cases of pregnant women infected with the zika virus in Jamaica.

Two more pregnant women have reportedly been confirmed with the Zika virus, the Jamaican health ministry is reporting.

Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr Winston De La Haye reportedly made the disclosure during a recent interview.

He was speaking from a conference in St Lucia.

According to Loop Jamaica, the Chief medical officer said this has brought the number of confirmed cases involving pregnant women to four.

All of the cases have been referred to a high-risk clinic, he said.

The number of confirmed cases of  Zika in Jamaica no stands at 24. Additionally, there are 1,788 suspected cases.

The Zika virus is largely spread by mosquitoes, but can sometimes, though rarely be transmitted via sexual intercourse.

Fortunately, most cases of Zika infection result in only mild symptoms like a fever and rash, but it is also responsible for severe birth defects including babies born with abnormally small heads and Guillain-Barre syndrome – a rare neurological syndrome that can cause death or temporary paralysis.
