GSAT Students to be Placed in Schools Closer to Where They Live
According to JIS, Minister of Education, Hon. Rev. Ronald Thwaites has stated that the Ministry will be ensuring that students entering secondary school this year are placed in institutions close to where they live.
He said the aim is to cut down on travel time and the gathering of students at bus parks, which he said, encourages idleness, and other negative behaviours.
“So this year, when the GSAT (Grade Six Achievement Test) selections come out, you are going to find that children are assigned more closer to their place of residence, because what is happening at the bus parks is out of order, not worth it,” he said.
He noted that while the preferences of parents will always be considered, the interest of children will be the deciding factor.
Rev. Thwaites was addressing a gathering of education stakeholders for region six, comprising the parishes of St. Catherine and Clarendon, held at the Cedar Grove Academy in St. Catherine on June 4.
During his address, the Minister called on the business community in the two parishes to increase support to schools, outside of the financial contributions they traditionally provide.

No I dnt think thats a idea…..because their average maybe higher than that schools average so I don’t think that would be fair to the students…….
You are the minister, not the parent (s). Do your job and let the parent (s) do theirs. Not for you to decide. Leave well enough alone.
Not fair at all place them where they work for sure unu naah place unu pickney anywhere u waah shoot wid shit
dnt come with dem bullshit deh..
Not bragging but if they had done this when I passed CE, I would not have been accepted to Immaculate, 6th form, UWI, Emory law school, Atlanta’s District Attorney’s Office and now an attorney for a Fortune 100 company.
I find this really disturbing as they are definitely not taking into consideration of how the parents may feel about this. If zoning took place when I did GSAT I would have definitely not gotten into Campion College and definitely wouldn’t have performed as well as I am performing now.
