Bacterium Laden Tissue Brands to Be Removed From Jamaican Shelves
The Health Ministry says it will soon begin removing various toilet tissue brands from the public domain to guard against possible public health risks.
In a statement this afternoon (April 16) the Ministry says its public health mechanism is responding immediately.
The Health Ministry says it is aware of the strong public sentiment following recent reports of high bacterial load on samples of at least four brands of household toilet tissue.
However, the Ministry also did not name the brands and did not say when it was expected to remove the offending brands from outlets.
Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Michael Coombs stated this afternoon that the Health Ministry intervened in the matter today.
The Ministry says it takes even more interest in this matter as indications are that the Bureau of Standards’ testing of several brands was prompted by reports of gynaecological incidents.
It states that the test results and the reported incidents bear implications for public health and safety.
As a result, the office of the Chief Medical Officer has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the reports of the BSJ tests and the gynaecological incidents.
The Ministry statement says contact has been made with the BSJ to ascertain veracity of the reports and true assessment of the situation surrounding the toilet tissue bands in question.
