Shanoya Douglas Crowned CARIFTA’s Most Outstanding Athlete

Jamaican sprinter Shanoya Douglas collected the Austin Sealy Award after being judged the most outstanding athlete at the 53rd CARIFTA Games in St George’s, Grenada on Monday.

She clocked 22.11 seconds (1.9m/s) in the Under-20 200m, improving the national junior record she had set one week earlier.

Back-to-back sprint double titles were completed by Douglas at the championships, confirming her control of the Under-20 sprints.

This achievement follows Kamari Kennedy’s success last year, marking consecutive wins for Jamaica and bringing the country’s total to 19 since the award began in 1977.

Earlier in the competition, Douglas secured gold in the Under-20 100m on Saturday and returned on Sunday to anchor Jamaica’s 4x100m relay team to victory.

Her 200m run also lowered the Jamaican junior record of 22.36 seconds that she had established at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Athletics Championships.

The performance also surpassed the CARIFTA Games record of 22.77 seconds set in 2013 by Shaunae Miller-Uibo.

On the all-time Under-20 rankings, Douglas now shares third place with Allyson Felix.

Only Christine Mboma and JaMeesia Ford have posted faster times at this level, with marks of 21.78 seconds and 22.08 seconds respectively.

Extending her position at the top of the world Under-20 rankings, Douglas strengthened her standing among the leading young sprinters globally.
