JLP Creates History With Third Straight Election Victory

The Jamaica Labour Party has emerged victorious in Wednesday’s parliamentary general election, creating history by securing a third straight term in its 82 years of existence.

According to the preliminary count, the JLP ended with 34 seats while the People’s National Party won 29.

Describing his party as “alive and well,” PNP President Mark Golding conceded defeat on Wednesday night and congratulated the JLP.

Though disappointed, he said he accepted the results of the election.

Golding also pointed to the absence of violence in such a tight race as proof of the maturity of Jamaica’s democracy.

The JLP’s string of successes began in 2016, was extended in 2020, and has now been continued with this latest triumph.

If the government serves its full five-year term, the party would notch up 14 consecutive years in office.

The longest uninterrupted hold on power, however, still belongs to the PNP, which controlled government for 18 years across four terms between 1989 and 2007.

For Dr. Andrew Holness, this outcome delivers a third consecutive term as Prime Minister.

He also had a brief stint as head of government between October 23, 2011, and January 5, 2012, after Bruce Golding resigned.
