Gayle Secures Silver to Lift Jamaica’s Medal Tally in Tokyo
Tajay Gayle delivered for Jamaica in Tokyo by adding a silver medal in the men’s long jump, giving him three World Championship medals across his career.
Jamaica’s overall tally now stands at six after five days of competition at the World Athletics Championships.
Thursday’s sixth day offers three additional medal opportunities for the nation.
The 2019 world title-holder, who secured bronze in Budapest last year, has now completed the collection of medals after leaping 8.34 metres to finish second.
His achievement places Jamaica in fifth position on the medal table with one gold, four silvers and a single bronze.
Jordan Scott advanced to the men’s triple jump final after reaching 17.19 metres.
Bryan Level eased into the men’s 200 metres semi-finals in 19.84 seconds, joined by Christopher Taylor who clocked 20.26 and Adrian Kerr at 20.13.
Shericka Jackson, the defending champion, ran 22.23 to win her 200 metres heat, with Ashanti Moore also progressing after posting 22.57 for second in her race, while Gabrielle Mathews did not qualify.
Shiann Salmon secured her place in the women’s 400 metres hurdles final with a season’s best 54.03 seconds.
Andrennette Knight exited the competition after finishing fifth in her semi-final in 54.35 seconds.
No Jamaican athlete will feature in the men’s 400 metres hurdles final.
Malik James-King ran a season-best 48.01 but only managed fifth in the opening semi-final.
Roshawn Clarke, clocking 48.37 for fourth in his race, also missed out on advancing to the medal round.
