Mexico Outclasses Reggae Girlz in Opening Friendly
Mexico delivered a dominant performance to defeat Jamaica 3-0 in their international friendly at CPKC Stadium on Saturday, snapping the visitors’ four-match win streak.
From the outset, the hosts controlled possession, dictated the tempo, and showed greater creativity.
Their superiority paid off with three first-half goals in a 14-minute blitz. Alexia Delgado opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, finishing off a well-worked move assisted by Nicolette Hernandez.
Christina Burkenroad doubled the lead in the 32nd, tapping in from a Lizbeth Ovalle cross. Ovalle was again the provider five minutes later, setting up Rebeca Bernal for Mexico’s third.
Jamaica struggled across all departments. The midfield failed to cope with Mexico’s slick passing, and the defence was regularly exposed.
Going forward, the Reggae Girlz looked disjointed and managed only four shots, with two on target. In contrast, Mexico fired 21 shots, eight of which tested goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer.
It was a frustrating night for head coach Hubert Busby’s side, who had come into the game on a high after back-to-back wins over South Africa and Peru. Despite brief moments of promise, the team never found their rhythm.
Assistant coach Deon Burton acknowledged the below-par performance but remains hopeful of a stronger showing in the second encounter.
“We were a little bit off it in some areas of the game,” Burton admitted. “Everyone held their hands up and took responsibility. It’s a learning experience, and we move on.”
The two teams will meet again in Houston on Tuesday, where Jamaica will aim to bounce back with a more cohesive and competitive display.
