Jamaican Exports to Face 10% Tariff in the US Under New Trade Measures

Goods shipped from Jamaica to the United States will now be subject to a 10 per cent duty following a decision announced by US President Donald Trump on Wednesday.

The new charges apply to imports from various nations.

According to the White House, the move is a response to Jamaica’s existing 10 per cent tariff on American goods entering the island.

Several other Caribbean countries, including Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, and St Kitts-Nevis, have also been affected by the new policy.

Trump delivered his remarks in the Rose Garden while standing before a row of US flags.

He declared sweeping trade measures against multiple nations, with the steepest penalties imposed on China and the European Union.

The president referred to the occasion as “Liberation Day.”

“Nations near and far, both friend and foe alike, have taken advantage of us for years,” he stated.

The toughest tariffs were assigned to countries he accused of unfair trade practices, with levies reaching 34 per cent on China, 20 per cent on the European Union, and 24 per cent on Japan.
