Mason Greenwood Begins Process to Switch Allegiance to Jamaica

Mason Greenwood, the 22-year-old footballer, has reportedly initiated the process of acquiring Jamaican citizenship, paving the way for him to represent Jamaica at the international level.

This move follows several months of recruitment efforts by the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), under the leadership of newly appointed manager Steve McClaren.

According to The Athletic, the Football Association (FA) has handed over registration paperwork to the JFF as part of a formal request to FIFA for Greenwood’s switch in national allegiance.

Although Greenwood made a single appearance for England in September 2020 against Iceland, his youth at the time permits him to change his national team representation.

A key step in this process involves Greenwood obtaining a Jamaican passport, which requires the birth certificate of his paternal grandparents, through whom he qualifies.

The processing time for such documentation can be lengthy, as demonstrated by Michail Antonio’s year-long wait before making his debut for Jamaica in September 2021.

However, it is noted that the Jamaican government has the ability to expedite the procedure.

McClaren, who took over as Jamaica’s manager at the start of August, has expressed his support for bringing Greenwood into the squad.

He has already had preliminary discussions with the player and is expected to hold further face-to-face talks in France.

Greenwood could potentially be included in Jamaica’s squad for the upcoming Nations League matches against Cuba and Honduras in September, with McClaren set to announce his first squad on August 30.

However, the timing of Greenwood’s inclusion will depend on the completion of his citizenship paperwork, the duration of which remains uncertain.
