Bolt, Thompson, McLeod Among IAAF World Athlete Of The Year Nominees (2016)

Jamaica’s 9-time Olympic gold medallist – Usain Bolt has once again been nominated to receive the coveted IAAF Male Athlete of the Year award.

Bolt has already received the award on five occasions (2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013).

His most recent nomination follows his triple-gold performance at the recently concluded Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Omar McLeod is the other Jamaican nominated for said award. McLeod won Gold in the 110m hurdles at the the 2016 Rio Olympics.

  

Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson is the sole Jamaican among the 10 Women’s Athlete of the Year nominees.

Thompson completed a rare sprint double at the Rio Games by winning gold in the 100m (with a time of 10.71 s) and the 200m (21.78 s), becoming the first female sprinter to do so since Florence Griffith Joyner at the Seoul Olympics in 1988.

The nominees were selected by an international panel of athletics experts, comprising representatives from all six continental areas of the IAAF.
