Alia Atkinson Smashes 50m Short Course Breaststroke World Record

New World Record for Atkinson!

Jamaica’s swimming phenom Alia Atkinson has broken the 50m short course breaststroke record.

She set the new record today (October 26) with a 28.64 clocking at the Tokyo leg of the FINA World Cup Tour.

The 27-year-old shaved 16 total hundredths off of the previous mark of 28.80 set by Jessica Hardy in Berlin in 2009.

Atkinson won the 100-metre breaststroke at the 2014 Short Course World Championships in Doha (equalling the record set by Rūta Meilutytė in 2013), becoming the first black woman to ever win a world swimming title.

Atkinson is also currently one of only three women ever to have broken the 29-second barrier in the 50 short course metre breaststroke.
