Hurricane Matthew Nears Jamaica, Approaches Category 3 Strength
Hurricane Matthew continues to intensify in strength as it continues along it’s projected path towards Jamaica.
The powerful storm is now classified as a category 2 hurricane (wins 96-110mph) but is expected to become a category 3 (111-129mph) hurricane before impacting Jamaica.
Hurricanes that attain category 3 status or above are considered ‘major’.
As of 10 am (Friday, September 30), Matthew had maximum-sustained winds of 115 mph, according to the United States’ National Hurricane Center. It was moving to the west-southwest at 12 mph and was located 495 miles east-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness has urged all Jamaicans to adequately prepare for Hurricane Matthew.
“The Government is now officially on high alert in preparation for a hurricane. It may not come, it may divert, but our job is to be prepared. So I have officially placed the apparatus of the Government on alert.”
“The Government will do what it can; it will do its part, but I have to appeal to the individual responsibility of each and every Jamaican to look out for your own safety and security. Heed the warnings that are given from the Government, particularly warnings to evacuate,” the Prime Minister stated.
