Miss Universe Jamaica 2015 Sues Pageant Organisers, Seeks Millions in Damages
Sharlene Rädlein, the winner of the Miss Universe Jamaica 2015 pageant is reportedly accusing organisers of failing to make good on the contract with her and is seeking millions in damages.
Those being sued are Mark McDermoth and Karl Williams — who are franchise managers — and Uzuri International Designs Ltd, who are exclusive holders of the Miss Universe beauty pageant in Jamaica.
Rädlein was selected winner of the competition on August 29, 2015.
In the suit filed by law firm Reid Burrell and Company, the claimant contended that in July 2015 she and the defendants entered into an agreement “whereby the defendants agreed to award the claimant a prize package valued at over J$2M to include a cash prize of J$1M, Dermoth Williams Couture Wardrobe valued at J$1,200,000, the Miss University Jamaica title, a scholarship at the New York Film Academy, a diamond watch courtesy of Diamond International, eye care products from Eye Q Optical, one year travel insurance from Axia, spa treatment courtesy of the Face place and gift baskets courtesy of Lasco Distributors” if she was selected winner of the competition.
“…but in breach of the agreement, the defendants have failed and or refused to pay the claimant the entire prize package and have caused the claimant to suffer loss and damage and to be put to expense”, the lawsuit clams.
Rädlein is claiming damages for breach of contract, further or in the alternative an order that all prize to be awarded to her be valued and that a cash award be paid to her of the amount outstanding by the defendant. She’s also asking for interest, among other things.
In her particulars of breach, Rädlein said the defendants had unlawfully and without just cause denied her entitlement to the cash prize and “unreasonably refusing” to honour the prize package, failing to provide her with a scholarship to the NY Film Academy, failing to ensure that she received and or was provided with eye care products and spa treatment.
The defendants have wrongfully and in breach of the contract with the claimant deprived her of her entire winnings from the Miss Universe Jamaica, 2015 competition and consequently have caused her to suffer loss and damage and to incur expenses,” the suit claims.
