Higher JPS Bills Coming This Month
Customers of the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) should expect to dig a little deeper to pay their electricity bills this month.
The JPS was recently granted tariff increases by the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR).
The increases which became effective on Tuesday will result in customers paying an average 2.6 percent more for their electricity bills this month.
During a recent media interview, Elizabeth Bennett-Marsh, Public Education Specialist at the OUR, gave an example of a small residential customer with electricity usage of 349 kwh per month which equated to a bill of $9,583. That customer will now see an increase of approximately $232.
The OUR representative said the regulator has also approved the introduction of a revised incentive scheme for system loss reduction, and based upon non-fuel revenues rather than fuel revenues, there are adjusted rates to be charged to pre-paid residential customers and some customers under the community renewal programme, and a full pass-through of the system losses in the fuel rate.
A 9.53 per cent increase has also been granted to the JPS in respect of the non-fuel revenue cap over the starting cap of 2014.
