T&T’s Attorney General Concerned About Well-Being of Jamaicans in the Republic
Trinidad and Tobago’s Attorney General, Faris Al-Rawi, has voiced his concern about the well-being of a large number of Jamaicans who currently reside in the twin-island republic.
While speaking in Jamaica last week, Al-Rawi stated that there are between 8,000 and 9,000 Jamaicans living in Trinidad, many of whom have overstayed their time and are now susceptible to unscrupulous persons.
The visiting AG said usually when people stay beyond their permitted extension time and work in a society, they fall off the national radar and end up facing all kinds of personal and occupational prejudice.who will tend to take advantage of the Jamaicans’ undocumented status.
Al-Rawl said in the whole mix, T&T needed to protect the Jamaican workers’ rights from a humanitarian standpoint, and also the fact that they are CARICOM nationals.
Mr Al-Rawi was on the island for the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force Plenary and Working Groups meeting which facilitated discussions on measures to battle money laundering, terrorism financing, corruption and other financial crimes across the Caribbean region.
