Jamaica Climbs FIFA Rankings After Victory Over Chile
Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz have once again broken into the to top 50 of the FIFA/Coca Cola World Rankings.
The positive movement follows their shock 2-1 victory over South American champions Chile last Friday.
Chile, at the time of their loss to Jamaica was ranked third.
Though friendly games do not carry as much weight as tournament games in FIFA’s calculations, beating the no.3 ranked team still served the Reggae Boyz well.
Jamaica has climbed nine places, moving from 55th to 46th.
Staying inside the top 50 is crucial towards Jamaica’s development as a football nation.
The English Football Association (the FA) has changed its rules regarding non-EEA (European Economic Area) players playing in the United Kingdom.
Previously, in order to be eligible to play in the UK, football players needed to have played in at least 75 percent of their country’s senior international matches over the previous two years and must have played for a top 70 ranked country (averaged over two years). That has now been changed to a top 50 ranked country.
On Thursday the team arrived in Fort Lauderdale (USA) for training ahead of the Copa America Centenario which gets underway on Friday with the United States facing Colombia.
The Reggae Boyz have been drawn in Group C alongside Uruguay, Mexico and Venezuela whom they open against on Sunday.
Mexico continues to be the highest ranked CONCACAF team at 16, while Costa Rica sits at no. 23 and the United States at 31.
