Jamaica’s Minimum Wage to Be Raised Early 2016

The island’s minimum wage could be raised as early as January 2016.

According to the Gleaner, Chairman of the Minimum Wage Commission, Silvera Castro says consultations with stakeholder groups have been concluded.

He says increases have been proposed for the general minimum wage payable as well as the minimum wage for industrial security guards.

Castro says he doesn’t expect the proposed increases to raise concerns among employees.

The last time the national minimum wage was increased was in January 2014, moving from $5,000 to $5,600 for a 40-hour work week.

The Minimum Wage for Industrial Security Guards was also increased, moving from $7,320.40 to $8,198.80 per 40-hour work week.
