Jamaican Boxer Shocks Argentine Champion (Video)
Jamaican-born boxer Ovill McKenzie surprised boxing fans around the world on Friday when he earned a draw with Argentina’s IBF cruiserweight champion Victor Emilio Ramirez in Buenos Aires.
He has a befitting name – “The Upsetter” and the 35-year old fighter with Jamaican roots lived up to his name.
Mckenzie (25-12-1) reportedly only had 11 days’ notice before heading to the capital of Argentina to take on the hometown champion Ramirez (22-2-1).
McKenzie began the fight with a menacing pace, unleashing a series of jabs, eventually catching Ramirez with his first big overhand right in the second round.
Ramirez never lost his composure however and put up strong resistance, tagging McKenzie a few times in the fourth, but the man from Jamaica refused to go away and kept on jabbing, even after the two-time world champion tested him with a big straight right in the sixth.
Fatigue took a toll on Mckenzie in the eighth round, but he did just enough in the remaining four rounds to register a draw on the scorecards.
