Jamaican-born Athlete Dies in Swimming Accident in St Kitts
A 24 year old Jamaican-born Canadian Olympic 400m runner athlete died in a swimming accident in St Kitts yesterday.
According to the BBC, Daundre Barnaby, drowned after he was wept out to sea by a strong current.
A strong back current took him out, his teammates tried to save him,” Athletics Canada said in a statement. “His body was found around 3:30 pm by local search and rescue.
The unfortunate incident occurred during a training camp as he swam with team-mates.
Barnaby finished sixth in his heat at the 2012 Olympics and earned a semi-finals spot at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games last year.
He was described as “an outstanding athlete and an even better young man” by Athletics Canada chief executive Rob Guy.
