5 Things Jamaicans Really Miss When They Live Abroad
Every day an estimated 2.5 million Jamaicans wake up on the other side of the world, miles away from their homes and even further away from their most cherished Jamaican treasures and memories.
For these Jamaicans living abroad, it only takes one taste, a song or even a scent to be instantly transported back to the island.
Here are five things most Jamaicans yearn for whenever they leave the island….
Check out our list and share what you miss the most in the comments.
5. In fifth place we have something that never fails to tickle the tongue. This is an instant and tasty reminder of home and a staple when growing up. Ackee and salt fish. One taste of this and you will instantly start reminiscing about Jamaica.
4. Coming in at 4th place is the true Jamaican swim. Whether it is Puerto Seco, James Bond Beach, Dunn’s River or Negril’s world famous Seven Mile beach, swimming in the Jamaican sea is a unique and extremely pleasurable experience. The texture of the water and golden sunlight makes the true Jamaican swim incomparable to swimming in any other nation around the world.
3. Jamaican Patties are the third most missed treat from the island on our list. Whether you like yours with beef, chicken, or even ackee. Make no mistake, Jamaican patties are the best in the world.
2. Coming in second place on our list: the weather. Anyone who battles the snow in Chicago or is drowned by rain in the London, knows that the weather in Jamaica is not to be taken for granted. As we often times say, “Wi nuh like cowl”. We really miss the sun!
1. Some might say this is the obvious choice, but there is nothing a Jamaican living overseas misses more than family and friends. They are the people who raised us, who make us laugh, who taught us and taunted us. They are the most influential people in our lives and they helped makes us who we are. That’s why it’s important to stay connected to Jamaica.

Couldn’t agree more. I would add one more: Memories. I remember as a child I would lie on my back, close my eyes and just feel the sun on my face as I listened to sounds around me. Even the bus (so far away) blowing its horn, constantly, was music to my ears.
Thanks for the memories. Made me cry.
Mmmmm I miss the ackee and Saltfish the most – Miss Jamaica BAD!!!!!
To be truly honest I really don’t miss it there , I live here longer than I Jamaica .
I live here longer than I lived in Jamaica too Hertenza and I still miss it.
I miss the vibes! The smell of jerk, the loud conversations in the streets, people laughing out loud, music blaring everywhere, taxi men and ductors shouting, higglers peddling their wares, men on street corner calling out Slimas or Champion. All together it makes for a vibrant and unique environment, which I have yet to find anywhere else.
