Opposition Storms Out of Parliament

Members of the Opposition walked out of Parliament yesterday as Finance Minister Audley Shaw closed the 2017-2018 budget debate.

The following was subsequently posted on The People’s National Party Facebook page:

“PNP MPs walked out of Parliament as a stand against the 2017/18 budget that negatively impacts the lives of the majority of Jamaicans.”

During his closing speech Shaw said: “the journey is with both smooth and bumpy passage in parts. But we believe in the resilience of the people of Jamaica.”

But opposition members chanted: “roll it back, roll it back,” in relation to the $13.5 billion tax package government announced a week ago.

“A resilient and productive person will seriously examine the policies and programmes to be financed by this budget and take advantage of the opportunities offered in areas such as housing solutions enumerated by the honorable prime minister yesterday,” Shaw said.

But Member of Parliament for Westmoreland Eastern Luther Buchanan objected saying, “Mr Speaker, that is not true.” He added: “You are misleading the house.”

Shaw continued:”affordable financing, income tax relief, and social protection services. If you are resilient, there is nothing that can hold you back.”

“You can walk out of the house, but you can’t walk out on the people of Jamaica,” Shaw said.
