Corporal Punishment to Be Made Illegal in Schools Islandwide
The practice of flogging students for various forms of insolence, though not as commonplace as in yesteryears – remains the preferred method of punishment for some educators in schools across the island.
However laws are currently being drafted specifically to prohibit corporal punishment.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness, while speaking in the House of Representatives on Tuesday afternoon stated:
“The Government will amend the Education Act to explicitly prohibit corporal punishment in schools”.
He noted that there were already laws enacted to prohibit corporal punishment in early childhood institutions, places of safety and children’s homes.
The pending move will essentially give an across-the-board effect to the position of no corporal punishment in schools.
