Man Finally Freed After Spending 50 Years In Prison Without Trial

71-year-old George Williams is now a free man after spending nearly five decades behind bars without a trial.

Williams was freed on Wednesday after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP)  dropped the criminal charges against him.

He was greeted by relatives after exiting the St. Catherine Circuit Court.

Williams was charged with murder but was never brought to court to answer the charges.

Earlier this month an 81-year-old inmate Noel Chambers died in prison after serving 40 years in prison without being tried or convicted for an offence.

Chambers had been incarcerated at the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre since February 1980 and appeared to be malnourished at the time of his passing based on photos that emerged online.

His death prompted widespread outrage resulting in heightened scrutiny of the island’s prison system.
