Reggae Boy Mariappa Tests Positive For Coronavirus
Adrian Mariappa, the experienced Jamaica defender, is one of a trio to have tested positive for coronavirus at English Premier League (EPL) strugglers Watford.
The 33-year-old, like the two staff members at Watford, has to self-isolate for seven days from 19 May with a view to being tested again next week.
Mariappa, with 49 international caps for Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz, admitted to English newspaper The Daily Telegraph: “I really don’t know how I got it. It’s quite scary how you can feel absolutely fine and yet still get the virus.”
The EPL’s inaugural tests revealed six positive results – Burnley assistant manager Ian Woan, two unnamed people and three from Watford.
Mariappa, who joined the club in 2016, added: “If it wasn’t for the fact that I’d gone back to training and had this test, then I’d never have found out that I had the virus and I’d just be getting on with things as normal – that’s obviously quite a strange thought.”
“My lifestyle is very quiet, certainly no parties or going out or anything. It was a big surprise, because I haven’t really left the house.
“Apart from some exercise and the odd walk with the kids, I’ve mainly just been home schooling and keeping fit.”
Prior to the positive test results emerging at Watford, skipper Troy Deeney was adamant that he wouldn’t return to training as he feared for his family’s health including his young baby.
