The United States Embassy recently stated the Jamaican lottery scam, because of its level of organization is now bigger than the drug trade.
According to a tweet by the embassy: “The lottery scam in Jamaica has morphed into an organised crime wave bigger than drugs”.
They also included a link to a story about an elderly US man who committed suicide after he was defrauded out of thousands of US dollars by scammers from Jamaica.
Less than two weeks ago, a CNN report credited the former PNP activist known as ‘Bebe’ with being Jamaica’s first lottery scammer and also labeled him “The Godfather of Lottery Scams”.
Bebe was killed as he exited his home in Ironshore , Montego Bay in May 2014.
The embassy’s website also stated:
The most prevalent in Jamaica is the lottery scam, where scammers lead victims to believe they have won a drawing or lottery, but the cash or prizes will not be released without upfront payment of fees or taxes. Scammers frequently target the elderly or those with disposable income.”
“If it is too good to be true, it is not true.”
