New Documentary portrays Jamaica as Extremely Homophobic Society

Jamaica Gully Queens documentary watch video

A recently released documentary titled “Young and Gay: Jamaica’s Gully Queens” has portrayed Jamaica as an extremely homophobic society.

According to the creators of the documentary, murder and rape are common occurrences in Jamaica against LGBTI people, with little to no retribution or justice brought against those responsible.

Below is an excerpt from their caption  for the short film:

After being forced from shacks, derelict buildings, and their own families, many homeless LGBTI Jamaicans have found refuge in the storm drainage systems of Kingston — known locally as the gully.

For trans girls and gay men unable or unwilling to hide their sexuality, the sense of community and relative safety the gully provides acts as a welcome sanctuary, and for many, a hope of change to come.

VICE News travelled to the New Kingston area to see what LGBTI life is like in Jamaica — where just being who you are can mean living a life underground.

Do you believe this is a fair and accurate portrayal of Jamaica’s attitude towards homosexuals? – Please let us know in the comments.

Who is lobbyingfor our children and the elderly the poor and rejected

Phillip Ck Fry

Clearly not you, Paula. Maybe if you were, you would be aware that people who advocate for gay rights also fight for child rights, elderly care, mentally ill persons, impoverished residents and women’s rights as they are all humans in need of help. Also, many gay persons fall into many, if not all of those categories mentioned above.

This is a really accurate documentary. It’s so sad that people have to live like that because of their sexual orientation.

What everyone have to understand is we as Jamaicans were taught that this is an abomination in the eyes of the lord and if we are to believe in God almighty and the rules he set forth for mankind then this is something not easily accepted for those who truly believe.

bullshit, not accurate, esp now in jamaica where ppl are more tolerant, but nonetheless disagree with that lifestyle choice, which is our universal right as well,to either agree or disagree.they choose to live in gullies.the film is another smear campaign tactic to pressure demonize the country and its ppl for their homo agenda.they care not of the means they use just their selfish ends coming to realization.

you see at about 30 secs that a homosexual admits that they attack and acid each other in the gullies when arguments break out.another homosexual the “rich queen” admits that the “scary queens” who are violent, aggressive, lewd, threatening to the general public,i have seen it myself, esp in new kgn, make it difficult n problematic for the homosexuals who behave like upstanding citizens and kep their private life private.and that buggery law,can the makers of this film quote statistics has to when n how rare the buggery law ever been used against anyone, its just there on the books.investigating and prosecuting any1 using… Read more »

Leviticus 20:13King James Version (KJV) 13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. Its better than death. you stupid and ludicrous towards they “the gay population of Jamaica.” What our main concern should be focusing on is to find out to what extent or should i say how much of the population of Jamaica is gay or condone with their heinous act and see how much of them are willing to change and try… Read more »

This is somewhat accurate bt who would rape gays but gays themselves, I hope they have documented just how much of a pestilence gays hv become raping straight men and causing a lot of trouble n this is y we behave like this, they know the ppl r not comfortable with their behavior n they r forcing society to accept them n so the society becomes rebellious n act out against them, so whatever they get they caused it.

we accept criminals, murderers who will hurt and destroy us but seek to hurt and alienate those who are just living their lives how they want to.

Just like how me a woman cannot have sex in public is the same way for the gays.they want to do whatever whenever and it does not look good..people cannot just look at a man and know he is gay but the whole world gonna know because he is either gonna put on some make up or choose to sex another man just to say yes i am gay accept it

well i dont think its fair because if you are a homosexual and is being aproach by straight men who really and truely did not know that they(homosexuals) were men dressed in skirt, dresses, tights, wigs with makeup acting like a female,so when they (heteorsexuals) they are going to naturally react but it is how they react is going to determine the deepness of cruelty of ones action because im sure that they have been ran down many times and we hear nothing of it. yup! they need love too but they cant be going around wanting and tricking men… Read more »

There seems to be a growing conspiracy around the world where these people want to be recognize and they will stop at nothing to suppress their life style on others who are opposed to it, but the fact is that there will never be a open gay community in Jamaica and all those who are fighting to establish such a feat will end up causing a civil war in Jamaica..and the fight will be like JLP and PNP the only difference will be both against gay that is the reality in Jamaica Gays have a rights as humans but buggery… Read more »

What is shocking is that at “daggering’s birthday party the prayer was for God to bless them and help them to obtain their rights. Smh… God a come fi Him world. While I do not condone violence against them. I believe it is right to ask God for tht. They shudder b asking God to help them change. The bible explicitly speaks out against it. And I believe that if you sin you dnt ask for a right to do so, but forgiveness is what they shud b praying for.

Why people is painting a bad picture of Jamaica is to achieve an objective, no one in Jamaica just see a gay and attack them, check it out they are the aggressors all the time, you can’t a man a want wine up pon straight man go where you know where you to go cause a nuff gay place here, stop want trick people same with your kind

I do believe that the MAJORITY, NOT ALL of Jamaicans are homophobic … many say their not, to save face, but deep down inside they despise them.

Olivia Bradshaw

This is not necessarily true….. I am afraid to walk in new Kingston at nites because I am afraid of the ghetto gays. They trouble you even when u are not looking at them. I feel like ur sexual orientation is every person own decision, but if it is not legal I think they should do it in there own private place. Stealing is a crime and person get charged for it so if that is against the law persons should be punished

Kyle Williamson

This man conveniently left out the fact that many of the named men living in the “gully” are convicted criminals. They were holding out in an abandoned house in Jamaica’s upscale millsborough avenue community, where they stole electricity, water, clothes, food items and disturbed the peace with their loud gay orgies http://jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20130704/lead/lead1.html . He also forgot to mention that the law we have against sodomy is rarely ever enforced, and prosecution itself is even more rare. The documentary is so misleading it is not funny

Kamala Williams

you know personally I don’t believe in homosexuality and frankly the idea of it grosses me out. I also think the gays in Jamaica are violent and criminals so it’s hard to feel pity of them but I also don’t believe I have the right to tell someone who to have sex with and I think many people are hypocrites because many of them break that buggery law in their bedrooms with their wives and girlfriends. This documentary has made me empathize with the gays because no-one should be ostracized or die for being different, that’s just ridiculous and a… Read more »

WHY….does the public have to know someone is GAY? WHY do gay people insist and FLAUNTING their GAYNESS? Do STRAIGHT people go around FLAUNTING their heterosexual persuasion? I know GAYS who function in society as any other man and no one would have a reason to throw a stone or use a machete to chop them up…why? Because they don’t engage in indecent/inappropriate behaviors in public. LGBTIs are at risk because they ‘dis’ the system blatantly instead of behaving as heterosexuals do……behave decently and normal in public.

Listen, the people who are commenting obviously don’t live here n see it for themselves. Here is a picture. A guy went to a bar on night n thought he was scoring wit a chick who jus roll up on him, after about 45min dancing and drinkin she says she wants to go somewhere and talk but cant have sex with him because she not that type of girl and decides to give him head. While he was getting head he started to touch on her n felt a dick. This is a true story. As a man wat would… Read more »
