Bolt’s Goal Remains To Be A Top-Class Footballer
Usain Bolt, the fastest man in history, has not dismissed playing football at the highest level at club level and plans to undertake trials for a leading German club.
But the Jamaican is still prevented from pursuing his dream of playing the beautiful game because of a hamstring injury sustained in his farewell race.
The eight-time Olympic gold medal winner, who retired from athletics after August’s World Championships, has often spoken about becoming a footballer with his ultimate dream to represent his beloved Manchester United.
The 31-year-old was prevented from achieving his lifelong ambition of pulling on a Manchester United shirt in September because of the hamstring injury picked up at the World Championships. He was originally selected to play for the Manchester United Legends to tackle Barcelona Legends in a charity game at Old Trafford.
Despite his injury, age and lack of honing his football skills over the years, Bolt has been invited to train with top tier German outfit Borussia Dortmund.
This tie-up, due to his sponsorship with Puma, came last November when the Bundesliga side invited Bolt to spend some time with their squad during pre-season training. Borussia Dortmund boast Puma CEO Bjorn Golden on their board.
Bolt explained: “They (Borussia Dortmund) said the invitation is always open, so it is all about me getting over my injury and into shape.
“My hamstring is just keeping back right now. In two weeks I can train again and get back to some shape, then I can really explore that situation by doing by the trials to see what level I’m at.
“For me it’s just to try to see if I really can be one of the best, because with anything I’m doing I’ll try to do my best.
“For me it’s a dream, another chapter of my life that I really want to do. It’s a personal goal, I don’t care what people really think about it.”
His agent Ricky Simms claims that clubs around the world are queuing up to offer his client a chance to have trials with them but he is realistic and has gone on record stating that he believes the Bundesliga and Premier League are a step too far for his client.
Yet Simms did say: “With football though in some form you will see him.”
And if Bolt shows enough promise with his ball skills then surely Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz could do with his height, pace and enthusiasm in their ranks.
