World’s Oldest Person – Jamaica’s Violet Moss-Brown Dies At 117

Violet Moss-Brown, the Jamaican woman who was recognised as the world’s oldest person earlier this year, has passed away at the age of 117.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness made the revelation via social media on Friday.

The following was posted on his Facebook page:

“On April 27 this year I had the honour of presenting the Prime Minister’s Medal of Appreciation to Mrs. Violet Mosse-Brown the oldest living person in the world.

It is sad to report that Mrs. Violet Mosse-Brown has died.

As I said at the time, Jamaica is proud of you “Miss Vy” you are an awe-inspiring woman. Your strength and the grace of God have sustained you over a century, a decade and seven years. You are a blessed woman, may God continue to strengthen you for many, many more years. Rest in Peace.”

Brown was the island’s first ever verified supercentenarian. She was born on March 10, 1900 when Jamaica remained a part of the British empire.

She was also the last living former subject of Queen Victoria who died in January 1901.
