$180 Million Earmarked For Emancipendence Celebrations
Government will be spending $180 million on the ‘Jamaica 55’ Emancipation and Independence celebrations islandwide.
The activities are being spearheaded by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) under the theme: ‘Celebrating Jamaicans Home and Abroad’.
Acting Executive Director of the JCDC Orville Hill says the funds cover activities throughout the parishes and also the celebrations in Kingston, inclusive of the Grand Gala on August 6.
He was speaking at a post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House on Wednesday.
In the meantime, Minister of Culture Olivia Grange says new effigies will be unveiled during the grand gala celebrations, on Sunday.
According to the minister, the effigies will include the island’s National Heroes as well as the late cultural icon Louise Bennett-Coverley; sprint sensation Usain Bolt; and reggae legend Bob Marley.
She also revealed that on Sunday, government will recognise former Prime Minister Edward Seaga, and reggae icon Jimmy Cliff.
